Sichuan Household Biogas, China

The project helps farmers in extreme poverty to build private biogas plants. The plant is essentially a slurry tank underground, where farmers can flush their pigs’ faeces into. In the tank, the feaces emits it methane gas, which via pipes is connected to a gas burner in the kitchen. Instead of emitting into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas, the methane is now burned, replacing the use of coal and wood for cooking.

When the feaces is degassed and broken down, it can be used as fertilizer on the farmers’ fields. But it also has a wide range of social benefits and makes a huge difference in the lives of farmers.

They don’t have to spend large sums of money buying coal, and don’t have to stand in the smoke of their fireplace all day. They also escape the smell of their animals’ feaces that decays in the barn.

Additional to this, they get organic fertilizer that can replace their chemical fertilizer they depend on and which they can sometimes also sell, which benefits both their economy and local biodiversity, yields better returns from the fields etc. (it is a phenomenon of “swirling” the topsoil by overuse of fertilizers). The environment also benefits from the reduced tree felling as a result of a new clean energy source, and the fact that pig feaces are no longer dumped in nearby lakes and rivers (as was partly done before), resulting in infected water sources and disease.

The project is aimed exclusively at the poorest of the poorest and thus combats inequality, both by giving families more money between their hands and by creating a lot of jobs in the local environment (around 7,500 new jobs have been created as a result of the project). As women in particular are responsible for collecting firewood and cooking, it is also women in particular who benefit from the time saved and the greatly improved indoor climate.

Carbon Credits from certified and trustworthy projects

Navigating the market for carbon credits can also be a challenge due to expensive resellers and non-certified projects.

Our job at Climaider is to select the best projects that are verified by the most strict industry standards (e.g. Gold Standard and Verified Carbon Standard) and our own internal criteria.

By gathering our member’s money, we are able to buy big bulks of credits directly from the projects, cutting out expensive middlemen. This also enables us to follow the money from you, as a member, to the projects, ensuring that your membership is removing as much carbon as we promise.

plant trees in Addition to your offsetting

In addition to offsetting, you also plant 15 trees for every ton of carbon you offset. The trees are planted in our forest on Madagascar through our partnership with Eden Reforestation Project

The locals in Ankilahila are hired to plant mangrove trees, which are a type of tree that absorbs 4-5 times as much CO2 as normal trees. The project restores the forest, but is also helping people out of extreme poverty.
